CBT TRAINING

Compulsory basic training is a legal requirement

Compulsory basic training is a legal requirement for all provisional licence holders so that they can ride up to a 50cc when aged 16 & up to a 125cc when aged 17 and over.

The CBT is a 6-hour course, or until your instructor is happy that you are riding safely on the road. The CBT will consist of the following:

  • SAFETY talk about helmets, clothing & weather protection
  • EYE sight check
  • CONTROLS on the bike & stand
  • BASIC bike maintenance
  • STARTING & STOPPING of the engine - moving off and stopping safely - gear changing
  • RIDING around the compound in a figure of eights – emergency stops –road position - turning left and right – U-turns – using mirrors and signals correctly
We will also have a talk on road signs – traffic conditions - observations – awareness and anticipation – road position – separation distance – defensive riding.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

Once your instructor is happy with your progress they will take you out on the road. You will be in radio contact with your instructor for a minimum of two hours. After the two hours, if your instructor is happy with your riding & that you are safe to be on the road unaccompanied you will receive a DL196 certificate.

This will validate your provisional motorcycle entitlement on your licence. You can then ride with L-plates, D-plated in Wales, these must be displayed on the front and rear of your bike, you are not permitted to use the motorway and you cannot carry a pillion passenger. Your DL196 (CBT certificate) lasts 2 years, and if you haven’t completed a theory and relevant practical test, the CBT must be renewed.

In order to do a CBT you must have both parts of your driving licence with you. (The Card Part & Paper Part)(Make sure your photo is still in date) If you still have the old paper licence, you will need to bring that along with your passport.

If you have riding gear bring it with you, as it is always nicer to wear your own clothing.

If you don’t have riding gear, don’t worry as we have gear that you can use. Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions. In cold weather wear lots of thin layers. Jeans are always best over layers. Always wear sturdy shoes or boots that cover your ankles

Lightweight clothing and trainers are not preferred

The CBT isn’t a test it’s an assessment and it may be that you will need extra time. If this is the case you will not have to complete the whole CBT again, just the parts that you are not up to standard on, this could be as little as 1 hour extra. Please do not be alarmed by this as your instructor is looking for a safe rider, not a perfect one. Any extra time over the 6 hours would be chargeable at our normal hourly rate.

You should understand the Highway Code. Most riders who fail to achieve standards do so because they have not read the Highway Code. This is particularly true of first-time road users. Please make sure you are familiar with the Code.

A further aid is the Hazard Perception DVD or you can have a look at it on the DSA website.
