RIDER TRAINING

Types of Licence

From January 19th 2013 there are four types of motorcycle licence to choose from. Depending on your age and what bike you wish to ride will determine which test you will need to take. The new regulations only affect people under the age of 24. The biggest change is age restriction for direct access. The OLD regulations said that once over the age of 21 you may ride any bike without restriction once you have completed your test. But NEW regulations say that you now have to be over the age of 24 to be able to ride any bike without restriction. With only one exception, where if you have held an A2 restricted licence for two years or more you may then do a further practical test to achieve your unrestricted licence.

If you are over the age of 19 you may take your test to get an A2 licence, once completed you may ride any bike, but it must be resricted so that the engine produces no more than 46.6 bhp (35kw)

Below is a table explaining the different criteria needed:

CBT

COMPULSORY BASIC TRAINING IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT FOR ALL PROVISIONAL LICENCE HOLDERS SO THAT THEY CAN RIDE UP TO A 50cc WHEN AGED 16 & UP TO A 125cc WHEN AGED 17 AND OVER.

The CBT is a 6 hour course, or until your instructor is happy that you are riding safe on the road. The CBT will consist of the following:

  • SAFETY talk about helmets, clothing & weather protection
  • EYE sight check
  • CONTROLS on the bike & stand
  • BASIC bike maintenance
  • STARTING & stopping of engine - moving off and stopping safely - gear changing
  • RIDING around the compound in figure of eights – emergency stops –road position - turning left and right – U turns – using mirrors and signals correctly
  • We will also have a talk on road signs – traffic conditions - observations – awareness and anticipation – road position – separation distance – defensive riding.

Once your instructor is happy with your progress they will take you out on the road. You will be in radio contact with your instructor for a minimum of two hours. After the two hours, if your instructor is happy with your riding & that you are safe to be on the road unaccompanied you will receive a DL196 certificate.

This will validate your provisional motorcycle entitlement on your licence. You can then ride with L-plates, D-plated in Wales, these must be displayed on the front and rear of your bike, you are not permitted to use the motorway and you cannot carry a pillion passenger. Your DL196 (CBT certificate) lasts 2 years, where if you haven’t completed a theory and relevant practical test, the CBT must be renewed.

In order to do a CBT you must have both parts of your driving licence with you. (The Card Part & Paper Part)(Make sure your photo is still in date) If you still have the old paper licence, you will need to bring that along with your passport.

If you have riding gear bring it with you, as it is always nicer to wear your own Clothing.

If you don’t have riding gear, don’t worry as we have gear that you can use. Please dress appropriately to the weather conditions. In cold weather wear lots of thin layers. Jeans are always best over layers. Always wear sturdy shoes or boots that cover your ankles

Light weight clothing and trainers are not preferred

The CBT isn’t a test it’s an assessment and it may be that you will need extra time. If this is the case you will not have to complete the whole CBT again, just the parts that you are not up to standard on, this could be as little as 1 hour extra. Please do not be alarmed by this as your instructor is looking for a safe rider not a perfect one. Any extra time over the 6 hours would be chargeable at our normal hourly rate.

You should understand the Highway Code. Most riders who fail to achieve standard do so because they have not read the Highway Code. This is particularly true of first time road users. Please make sure you are familiar with the Code.

A further aid is the Hazard Perception DVD or you can have a look at it on the DSA web site.

WHEN BOOKING IN FOR A CBT A £50 DEPOSIT IS REQUIRED.

Can be made payable over the phone or by calling in to the shop.

The A1 Licence course is the same as the Direct Access course (which is explained in the next section below) other than it is all done on the 125cc, which means you wouldn’t do the two hour lesson where you move onto the larger machine.

A2 LICENCE (over age of 19) & A LICENCE (over age of 24)

Once you have completed a CBT the next step is to move up on to the larger machine. This will be the bike that you will be taking your test on, so you will have a Two hour lesson where you will be introduced to the larger bike to get yourself comfortable firstly riding on our training area, then once comfortable finishing the lesson by going for a ride on the road. This is a no pressure lesson it is simply to get you comfortable on the larger bike.

The next lesson is where we start to look towards your module 1 test. The module 1 test consists of a lot of slow control riding, so we go back to basics and spend two hours on Clutch Control, U-Turns, Figure of Eights & Emergency Stops. We will also be keeping a close eye on your riding, making sure that you’re heading in the right direction for passing your module 2 test as well.

The next two hour lesson is where we concentrate on the manoeuvres in preparation for you Module 1 Test. This consists of riding up to the Chester Test Centre & practicing the module 1 on the actual test site.

On the day of your Module 1 test we ride you to & from your test, with a little practice of your slow control & Emergency Stop just before your test. The final two hour lesson is where we prepare you for your Module 2 test. Throughout the lesson we will be making sure that you are reaching test standard & have a clear understanding of what the Examiner will be looking for during your test. We can also at an extra charge offer you a three hour lesson, where we would take you around the test routes of your desired test centre.

The Final part is when we will ride you to & from the test centre on the day of your Module 2.

Booking your Theory

Before you can book your Practical Test you need to have passed a Theory & Hazard Perception Test. This is done at a DSA centre (our nearest is Liverpool) You can start your training without having done your Theory but it is advisable to pass this as soon as possible so you can book a practical test date to work towards.

There are many discs, websites and phone apps to assist in your preparation towards your theory test.

Booking your Practical Tests

Once you have passed your Theory & Hazard Perception Test you can now think about booking your Practical Tests. When booking both your Module 1 & Module 2 tests you want to make sure that you have sufficient time between both test dates, so that if for any reason you can’t take your Module 1 test you will still be in the cancelation period to change your Module 2 test without being charged. The practical tests take place with the DSA at their MPTC (our nearest is Chester or St Helens) Once you have booked your tests make sure that you let us know the dates & times. Also that you get your appropriate lessons booked.
